LABORANTSKOLEN
NORDSJÆLLAND
As a lab technician, you cover all the details
A lab technician has been involved when the media talk about salmonella,
gene technology and DNA analyses. When you read about new pharmaceuticals,
deoxygenation or E. coli in drinking water, you can be sure that a lab
technician has analysed it.
Lesser-known jobs that lab technicians do include the labelling on the
food you eat and research in gene modification of new plants.
Overall, few things in your daily life have not been carefully analysed
at a laboratory.
To this should be added all the new research in biotechnology and new
pharmaceuticals.
All this increases the need for lab technicians.

Programme
The lab technician programme is a short college education spanning 2.5
years. Already after 1.5 years, you start a paid company-training programme,
which runs for one year. At the school, you begin by studying general
subjects, which are then supplemented with chemical engineering and
biotechnology. The in-school programme ends with an optional specialty
course. You complete your final exam project in cooperation with the
company where you are doing in-service training. Getting in-service
training in Frederiksborg County is easy, because we have a rapidly
growing number of lab technician jobs.
During the programme, you will learn to plan and perform assignments
in the lab. This thoroughly prepares you for handling jobs relating
to production, research, counselling and control in both private and
public laboratories.
If you want further details about the programmes structure, you
can click into our website at www.eanord.dk and choose Lab technician
(Laborant).
Student environment
The lab technician programme at Erhvervsakademiet Nordsjælland
is situated at Carlsbergvej 16 in Hillerød, a mere five-minute
walk from Hillerød Station.

The lab technician programme has 14-15 employees and 4-5 classes. We
are one of the largest lab technician colleges in Denmark and also one
of the nicest. You can always drop by for a talk with a study counsellor
and get a feel for the good atmosphere.
All classrooms are equipped with computers with Internet access and
printers, so you will have access to a computer whenever you need one.
You will be working in brand new laboratories specially approved
for gene technology.
We focus on continuously improving the programme, a process that involves
considerable student input.
Continuing education
Many lab technicians have great success continuing their studies to
become a pharmacist or engineer.
You can also continue your education through the diploma programme and
subsequently the masters programme.
The laboratory technician programme
For many years, I wasnt sure what education to choose,
but now I know that Im meant to be a lab technician.
Anita Christensen, graduate of the lab technician college Hamlet
Anita Christensen and Charlotte Helene Kongslev both work at Milana
A/S in Ellsinore. Anita finished her education in Hillerød in
1998, while Charlotte finished hers in Roskilde in 1996. Both work for
the GC group, which has 14 employees.

Our work involves examining contaminated soil and water samples. We
check for pesticides, PAH, oil, petrol, etc. Taking these types of samples
is becoming more and more common. It is fascinating that one can do
analyses on such small amounts. It takes six months training to
master an analysis method, and the analyses keep presenting new challenges.
Charlotte says she has fun solving the problems that arise, and Anita
points out that they have the freedom to plan their own work schedule.
Both agree that the profession of lab technician offers a wealth of
opportunities, e.g. research in biotechnology. We also enjoy our job
because we do it better than others. It gives us a sense of pride to
say that we are lab technicians. Anita adds, for many years, I
wasnt sure what education to choose. But from day one, I knew
I was meant to be a lab technician.
